The Summer 2012 Games

Everyone who saw the opening ceremonies of the 2012 London Olympic Games agree it was one of the most impressive Olympic opening ceremonies ever. All the international visitors arrived and had no problem arriving on time as the Olympic traffic lanes were open and also extra public transportation was provided.

The Park

The Olympic Park in Stratford, England is the location of the summer Olympic and Paralympic games during the London Olympics. This place is the central venue for the games. The Olympic Park has nine Olympic venues such as the velodrome, main stadium as well as the Olympic Village and more.

Since 2007

To many the Olympics have taken a long time in arriving. For those who were involved with the health and safety provided during the construction of the Olympic venues, it was similar to the completion of a well-run marathon. Since 2007 the Health and safety issues have been a major concern for construction of the Olympics venues.

Olympic sized undertaking

The goal from the beginning was to make the construction of the buildings for the 2012 London Olympics the safest constructions projects ever known. In order to accomplish this in 2007 the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) was created. The challenge of buildings on such a large scale made it one of the most complex construction projects ever. It was an Olympic sized challenge that required extremely detailed planning and a high level of dedication from everyone involved.

Olympic Gold Medal results

The ODA rose to the occasion and delivered. The project demonstrated a high level of success in the area of health and safety and achieved the goal of no work related deaths during the construction part of the project. Having high standards for health and safety made a major contribution to the successful completion of a rather demanding project. According to the statistics released by the ODA there were a little over a hundred reportable incidents after millions of working hours completed. This performance can only be described as winning the gold.

Lessons Learned

The performance of health and safety provided a lesson of exceptional achievement during the construction projects. The things learned during the construction portion of the London 2012 Olympic Games are being used by companies from many different industries and of various sizes. The constructions issues of safety leadership, managing working at height and how to involve the workforce are some of the lessons that are being passed on.

Health and Safety importance

The construction that has taken place for the 2012 Olympic Games at London is being recognized as a large scale project that others can learn from. The ODA head of health and safety is quoted at saying "Managing health and safety well is not a cost. It's an investment."

The time spent planning for every eventuality across the spectrum of health and safety has demonstrated within the Games fortnight the vast benefit doing so has achieved.

A new attitude

The 2012 London Olympic Games could go down as not only an impressive Olympics, but one where the approach to the essential elements of health and safety during construction changed for the better.
